GAW vs SLK | Twitter impressed as Guyana Amazon Warriors beat St Lucia Kings to progress to CPL final

Guyana Amazon Warriors entered the finals of CPL 2025 after beating St Lucia Kings by 14 runs in the first qualifier. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie’s four-wicket haul and Dwaine Pretorius’ all-round performance meant the Warriors made it to the third successive finals in the tournament.

After being put in to bat at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, the Warriors struggled to set the pace as the openers could add only 45 runs in the first six overs before Ben McDermott departed for 34 off 27 balls. The Warriors continued to struggle, and a middle-order collapse meant the side was placed precariously at 107/6 with less than five overs to play. However, Pretorius and Romario Shepherd brought in the much-needed aggression lower down the order to take the side past the 150-run mark. Both players hit two fours and a six during their eight-ball stay to make 17 and 21, respectively, to ensure that the Warriors had something to bowl at before the innings ended off the penultimate ball. Tabraiz Shamsi was the pick among the Kings’ bowlers with a spell of 3/33 in four overs, while captain David Wiese, Tymal Mills, and Alzarri Joseph all had two wickets.
The Kings’ response was even worse as they lost both openers cheaply, with the score reading 10/2 after two overs. Pretorius and Shepherd were once again at the forefront, dismissing in-form Tim Seifert and Johnson Charles, respectively. The visitors never recovered from that shock as the spin duo of Imran Tahir and Motie took over to push them to a lowly 48/7. The left-arm spinner shackled the timber of Roston Chase and Tim David before sending back skipper David Wiese, while the veteran Tahir rearranged Aaron Jones’ stumps. Though the Kings’ lower order showed admirable grit and fight to take the side close to the target, the initial damage was beyond repair and hurt their prospects. Khary Pierre smashed five sixes and three fours during his 50 off 29 balls, while Mills chipped in with an 18-ball 30 as the Kings were bowled out for 143 in the final over. Motie ended with figures of 4/30, while skipper Tahir and Pretorius had 2/22 and 2/24, respectively.
