Cristiano Ronaldo, 40, will continue with Portugal as long as he wants, says Ricardo Carvalho. With 223 caps and 141 goals, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains the team’s captain. Having won Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles, Ronaldo is expected to feature at his sixth World Cup in 2026 under Roberto Martinez.

In the latest update on Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, former teammate Ricardo Carvalho has backed the 40 year old striker to continue playing for his country for as long as he desires. Ronaldo, who signed a two year contract extension with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, is still central to Roberto Martinez’s Portugal setup and is expected to lead the team into the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Having made his senior international debut in 2003, Ronaldo has since gone on to become Portugal’s all time record holder with 223 caps and 141 goals, alongside winning three major international trophies, including the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles. Carvalho, now working on the coaching staff, praised Ronaldo’s fitness, mentality, and leadership, stressing that the forward remains a vital part of the squad.

He emphasized that Martinez made the right decision to bring him back into the fold after the 2022 World Cup, with Ronaldo continuing to inspire teammates on and off the pitch. While acknowledging that time will eventually catch up, Carvalho pointed out Portugal’s depth in leadership with several players from top European clubs. Still, Ronaldo remains the captain and symbol of Portugal’s ambition heading into 2026.
