AIFF to introduce Women’s Football League later this year

In what could be a major boost for Women’s football in India, the AIFF has decided to introduce a women’s football league in the country later this year. AIFF President Praful Patel confirmed the decision on Wednesday after the Special General Body meeting at New Delhi on Wednesday.
“We had talks about a Women’s League and we shall kick-off the Women’s League sometime this year itself,” Praful Patel was quoted as saying by .
The proposal about a women’s professional league has been in the pipeline for the longest time, with many I-League clubs expressing their keenness to form teams. All India Football Federation Secretary Kushal Das had confirmed in September last year that a women’s league was on the anvil.
“We are working on it but we don't know when we will be able to start as the tournament requires funding to the tune of Rs 3-4 crore," Das told , back in September 2015.
AIFF President Praful Patel also added that more emphasis was being given to Women’s football in India to help the team qualify for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Indian women’s team is ranked 58th in the World and 13th in Asia.
