Brief score: RCB 106/2 (10) [Salt 57(27), Mayank 19(13); Musheer 1/27(2)] beat PBKS 101 (14.1) [Stoinis 26(17), Prabhsimran 18(10); Suyash 3/17(4)] by 8 wickets
Asked to bat first, Punjab Kings were tasked with the daunting prospect of posting a total on a fresh green Mullanpur deck with plenty in it for the seamers. However, Priyansh Arya did not wait for the demons to come into play when he innocously chipped his fifth delivery straight to short cover to hand Royal Challenges Bengaluru their first breakthrough in just the second over. Prabhsimran Singh tried to move past the setback with a maximum in the same over and consecutive boundaries three deliveries later, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar's riposte had the wicket-keeper caught behind. Josh Hazlewood joined the party by nicking behind Shreyas Iyer and another bumper in his next over took care of compatriot Josh Inglis to leave Punjab reeling at 38/4. Marcus Stoinis tried to turn the tide with a couple of big hits but Nehal Wadhera chopped on three balls after the powerplay ended to leave Punjab reeling at 50/5. Rajat Patidar seized the momentum by introducing Suyash Sharma into the attack who just took two deliveries to spin a magical googly past Shashank Singh and into the stumps. The circumstance forced Punjab into bringing on Musheer Khan for a debut as an emergency Impact Sub but his stay lasted just three deliveries before he was undone by another Suyash wrong'un. The 22-year-old returned in his next over to get the better of Stoinis after his spirited cameo of 26 from 17 and even though Azmatullah Omarzai embarked on a one-man rescue mission with 18 runs in 12 balls, a flying take from glovesman Jitesh Sharma had PBKS bowled out for 101.
In response, Virat Kohli set the tone for the chase with a resounding boundary off his very first ball and added another to his tally in the second over. Phil added Salt to Punjab's wounds by dispatching Arshdeep for a four and a six but the opening duo's fun ended when Kyle Jamieson extracted extra bounce to dispatch Kohli and end the 30-run stand. Four exceptional deliveries to follow saw Kyle Jamieson walk away with a maiden against a dizzy Mayank Agarwal, but the conditions still were not enough to stop the Salt juggernaut. The Englishman crunched the Kiwi for two fours and a maximum in his next go-around, taking the powerplay score to 61/1. Musheer Khan managed a consolotary scalp by stifling Mayank Agarwal down leg but the visitors got across the line in the 10th over, with Salt ending unbeaten on 56 off 27.
