Australia-A have named 14-member squads for two four-day games and three one-dayers against India A, beginning September 16. Four Baggy Green holders in Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, Cooper Connolly, and Todd Murphy will don the whites while Jake Fraser-McGurk has been named for the List-A games.
Australian chief selector George Bailey on Thursday revealed the Australia-A contingent that will travel to India the following month for a mutli-format tour as the nation prepares for an inevitable transition period. Alongside a capped quartet, the four-day squad features the centrally contracted but uncapped Test duo of Xavier Bartlett and Lance Morris, as well as prodigous Victorian batting talents Oliver Peake and Campbell Kellaway. However, their skipper on the last assignment in Sri Lanka earlier this year, Jason Sangha, and previous season's leading Sheffield Shield run scorer Jake Weatherald failed to find a spot despite impressive performances.
"The subcontinent provides many unique challenges and the opportunity to utilise different skills with bat and ball," Bailey explained, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.
"We hope repeated experiences in these conditions will assist players in developing an effective method and understanding of their game for future sub-continent tours."
Australia is set to play five Tests as part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India in early 2027 which will be their first Test tour of the nation since a 3-1 hammering in 2023. While the home Ashes beginning in November is the more pressing matter at hand, four Sheffield Shield rounds ahead of the marquee series are more likely to play a role in determining the Kangaroos' squad make-up given the vastly different conditions in the subcontinent and Down Under.
"I don't think the surface of Lucknow is going to be a great read through to what we're going to get across the summer. Whilst we'd be thrilled to see that [players excelling against India-A], and that's a really important tool for us and we're really interested in the performances of players there, there will be some separation. And I do think performing across the start of the summer is going to be important." Bailey added.
Nevertheless, the two four-day games might still impact the current selection hierarchy as a second opening spot alongside Usman Khawaja remains up for the taking. Sam Konstas and Nathan McSweeney were the first claimaints to the role in the 2024/25 BGT, the latter even making it to a two-Test Sri Lanka tour albeit Travis Head's promotion to the top of the order kept him out of the XI. Maruns Labuschagne thereafter assumed the role for the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June, before being dropped altogether for three Tests in the Caribbean where Konstas reprised the spot. However, the teenager failed to surpass 25 across six innings and recorded four single digit scores, prompting Bailey to affirm the likes of Weatherald remain in the mix despite not making it to the India tour.
"A lot of selection is potentially being in the right place at the right time. So if he starts the year as he had last year, he'll be well in the mix," Bailey said of Weatherald.
A host of the four-day players will return Down Under before the white-ball leg to take part in the Shield opener, slated for October 4. The shuffle offers a chance for Jake-Fraser McGurk another chance at remaining in the Australian set-up, as his horrific start to international cricket continued with another single digit score against the Windies after a lst-minute call-up for the T20Is. The opener has recently been working on his wicket-keeping skills and could wield the gloves for the first time in List-A cricket against India A.
"For many of these players we remain interested in the development of their short-form cricket as well, but balancing out priorities meant we wanted them back and available for the start of the Sheffield Shield season," Bailey said.
"This provides opportunities for Harry Dixon, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mackenzie Harvey, Tanveer Sangha, Lachie Shaw, Tom Straker, Will Sutherland, and Callum Vidler who will play the one-day matches in Kanpur."
