As the summer transfer window closed, Manchester United were left reflecting on what might have been in their striker search. The club explored several options before ultimately completing a £73.3 million move for Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. Earlier in the window, United had considered Moise Kean, who was available for £45 million due to a temporary release clause at Fiorentina. However, they did not act, and the Italian forward later signed a new contract until 2029, with his clause rising to £53 million.
Reports from Italy suggest United may now regret that decision, especially as Kean’s market value has climbed to between £57 million and £67 million, according to the CIES Football Observatory. The Red Devils also weighed up moves for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Viktor Gyokeres, who instead joined Arsenal for £64 million. Meanwhile, Liam Delap chose Chelsea for £30 million despite United’s interest.
Kean has expressed his desire to remain at Fiorentina, stating he feels motivated and grateful to the club for their support. In contrast, Rasmus Hojlund, another young striker admired by United, moved to Napoli in a deal worth up to £43.2 million. United’s choices highlight the fine margins in the transfer market, with Amorim now tasked with maximising Sesko’s impact.
