‌After putting Delhi in, the Sunrisers skipper Pat Cummins led from the front picking up a wicket off the first ball in his first two overs to reduce the visitors to 6/2. Just when it looked like Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul would bail Delhi out from further trouble, Cummins once again matched his feat to pick another first-ball wicket in his third over to dismiss Porel. The southpaw’s dismissal meant the Aussie pacer combined with wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan for the third time in the match to record identical dismissals. With the pacers getting good support from the surface, Cummins introduced Harshal Patel in the next over and the seamer reaped instant reward. Harshal outfoxed the Delhi skipper Axar Patel with a slower ball, as the batting side crawled to 26/4, registering their lowest score in the powerplay this year. Things didn’t turn any better for the Capitals after the powerplay as KL Rahul nicked a beauty from Jaydev Unadkat that straightened a tad after coming in with Kishan once again making no mistake behind the stumps. However, Tristan Stubbs and Vipraj Nigam tried to reconstruct the visitors’ innings with a 33-run partnership off 30 balls for the sixth wicket. But a terrible mix-up ensued between the duo and Vipraj had to walk back after trying in vain to stop his partner from running the second run. With the visitors looking down the barrel and trying to avoid the embarrassment of a sub-100 total, impact player Ashutosh Sharma joined Stubbs in the middle. He went after SRH spinner Zeeshan Ansari, tonking two sixes of the leggie to tally 14 runs in the 15th over. The Indian batter then hit consecutive fours off the last two balls of Harshal’s 17th over to take Delhi past the 100-run mark. That gave an impetus to Stubbs at the other end as he scored two boundaries in the next over in an attempt to shore up his struggling innings. The duo’s exploits towards the end of the innings helped Delhi reach a respectable 133/7, with 61 runs coming in the final six overs.

With rain pouring down during the innings break, the start of the Sunrisers’ innings got delayed. The incessant rains continued and groundsmen were in full swing to ensure the home side got a chance to chase even though the number of overs started to reduce. But rain had the final say as both sides ended up getting a point each and that resulted in SRH being formally eliminated from the IPL this year. However, Delhi continued to be in the race for the playoffs at fifth place with 13 points from 11 matches.
