Match Report

On a cloudy evening at Old Trafford in Manchester, India Women showcased their growing all-round depth with a confident six-wicket win over England Women in the fourth T20I. Smriti Mandhana’s elegant half-century and Shree Charani’s three-wicket burst were the pillars of a clinical performance.

England, sent into bat, started brightly with Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt-Hodge putting on 47 inside six overs. Both showed aggressive intent, with Wyatt-Hodge launching left-arm spinner Shree Charani for a six over cover. However, Charani struck back sharply, removing both openers in the space of eight balls. The innings stuttered from there as Alice Capsey and Paige Scholfield failed to adapt to spin. However, a late cameo from Amy Jones, who scored 24 off 21 balls, and Sophie Ecclestone’s brisk 15 gave the hosts a fighting total of 139/7. Charani ended with an impressive spell of 3/20 in four overs while off-spinner Deepti Sharma chipped in with two wickets.

India’s reply started on a positive note with Shafali Varma being the initial aggressor with an 18-ball 22. Meanwhile, Smriti Mandhana also looked in majestic touch as she carved the gaps on the off-side with ease, reaching her fifty in just 34 balls. The pair’s opening partnership set the tone for the chase but England clawed back into the game with Bell removing Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur in quick succession. But the calm head of Amanjot Kaur, who remained unbeaten on 31 off just 19 balls, steered India home in the penultimate over. Mandhana top-scored in the game with her 36-ball 51, which included seven fours and a six, as India sealed the series with a game to spare. Lauren Bell was once again England’s standout bowler, finishing with 2/20 in her four overs, while Charlie Dean picked up a solitary wicket.

Player of the Match

Smriti Mandhana was declared the Player of the Match for anchoring the chase with a fluent 36-ball 51 to steer India Women to a six-wicket win.
