Matty Godden, now with Charlton Athletic after leaving Coventry last year, is set to face his former club at the CBS Arena. The 33-year-old striker, who scored 22 goals this season, praised Frank Lampard’s impact, calling Coventry a club, building something special, after their near play-off success.

When the final whistle blew at Wembley, Matty Godden had helped Charlton Athletic clinch a 1–0 win and promotion, capping off a season in which he scored 22 goals across all competitions, including 18 in League One. Now, the 33-year-old striker is set for an emotional return to the CBS Arena to face his former club Coventry City.

Having spent five memorable years at Coventry, Godden described the club as "like family," staying in touch with many former teammates and receiving good luck wishes during the play-offs. His departure to Charlton a year ago marked a fresh challenge, and his goal in the semi-final played a key role in Charlton’s journey back to the Championship. Though thrilled with his own success, Godden admitted he was "gutted" by Coventry’s dramatic play-off exit.

Still, he remains optimistic about the club’s future under Frank Lampard, praising the fresh approach and improved standards compared to the previous era under Mark Robins. As he prepares to return as an opponent for the first time, Godden is excited to reunite with familiar faces and reflects warmly on his time at Coventry. “They’re building something strong,” he said, hopeful that the Sky Blues continue their rise.
