Whether batters should walk or not when they know they are out is an age-old debate in cricket, but Rashid Khan added a new dimension to the argument. The Afghan skipper was adamant on staying at the crease and taking a review, even after his bails lit up against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
Afghanistan suffered yet another batting collapse at the Shaikh Zayed Stadium in their must-win Group B Asia Cup clash against Sri Lanka as 26/0 became 79/6 in a 10-over span. The onus thus fell on veterans Mohammed Nabi and Rashid Khan to once again bail their team out of trouble and the skipper decided he is the one who needs to take charge. Rashid began his theatrics with a charge down the track against Dunith Wellalage off his second ball, followed by 10 runs off two Dasun Shanaka deliveries a couple of overs later. Yet, a spree of dot balls brought his strike rate crashing back down to nearly run-a-ball, meaning the all-rounder had to go after Nuwan Thushara come what may as the pacer came on with just three overs remaining. What followed was pure cinema.
Thushara trundled in, gathering pace with each step in the run-up and with a flurry of energy delivered the Kookaburra from his typical round-arm angle. However, knowing his counterpart was looking for a big hit, the quick cleverly rolled his fingers during release to take pace off the delivery. Rashid shuffled across the stumps as the ball approached him but was completely flummoxed by the lack of speed, and in a desperate attempt tried to hoick the ball towards the leg-side while down one knee. However, the Kookaburra dipped under his bat, landing by his foot before thumping into his torso plumb in front of the stumps, leading to an immediate appeal from the rivals. Yet, Rashid was in no mood to leave the crease and before the umpire could even raise his finger, the Afghan skipper signalled for a review. Amidst all this chaos though, the ball had dropped to the deck after hitting Rashid and rolled onto the stumps, dislodging the left bail and lighting up the stumps. But Rashid remained blissfully unaware until both Thushara and the umpire pointed with their fingers asking Rashid to look behind him, who quickly walked off after realizing what had transpired.
Twitterati could not stop laughing.
