The game of cricket is a very unpredictable affair where there are moments of magic created by the players on the field. One such moment was created by James Wharton, who took one of the best catches running backwards to dismiss opener Tom Haines in the game against Sussex on Tuesday.
The eleventh round of the County Championship has begun with some interesting turn of events. In the game between Yorkshire and Sussex at Scarborough, it was Sussex who were the favorites ahead of the game against a struggling Yorkshire side. However, it was the Roses who dominated the first day of the game, with the Sharks struggling on a score of 210/9 at stumps. Though there were some decent knocks from some batters, the Dom Bess-led side managed to break the partnerships as soon as they started to look threatening in the middle. Though the bowlers bowled some great spells to put pressure on the batters, it was a moment of brilliance in the field that got the fielding team pumped up.
This was the first wicket of the Sussex innings, and the batter who was a victim of this amazing display of catching was Tom Haines. The magical moment came in the ninth over of the innings, bowled by right-arm pacer Jack White. Haines was batting on 15 and looked comfortable at the crease, but disaster struck in the third delivery of the over as he top-edged a ball which went straight up in the air. It seemed like the red cherry would land safely, but Yorkshire top-order batter James Wharton had other plans. The 24-year-old cricketer was stationed at short square leg, ran a long way back towards the boundary line in an attempt to take the catch. When it seemed like Wharton might not get to the ball, he completed the take with a big dive that shocked everyone on the ground. This would arguably go down as one of the best catches of the County season.
The fans went insane after this outstanding catch from Wharton.
What a catch!
That is RIDICULOUS 🤯
