‌WPL 2025 | Ashleigh Gardner appointed captain for Gujarat Giants

The Gujarat Giants have announced Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner as their team captain for the forthcoming Women’s Premier League starting February 14. She replaced fellow national teammate Beth Mooney, who led the side for a couple of seasons in the 2023 and 2024 editions. 

The WPL handle took to social media to announce Gardner as the successor for Mooney, who led the side for a couple of seasons since 2023. 

Gardner was roped in for a whooping INR 3.20 Crores by the franchise ahead of the inaugural WPL season. In 16 innings, the all-rounder scored 324 runs at a strike rate of 128.57 whilst picking up 17 scalps at a bowling strike rate of 19.23. 

"It is an absolute honor for me to be named the captain of Gujarat Giants. I have loved being a part of this team and I am excited to lead this fantastic group in the upcoming season. We have a great mix of young and experienced players and plenty of Indian talent in our squad. I am looking forward to working with the team and making our fans proud,” Gardner cited in a statement released by the Giants.

The Giants failed to make the knockouts even once in the previous two editions, finishing their campaigns at the wooden spoon. The side have revamped during the mini-auction by fetching the likes of Kashvee Gautam, Deandra Dottin, Daniel Gibson, and, Simran Shaikh, among others.

The Gujarat side will be playing three home games in Vadodara against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, UP Warriorz, and Mumbai Indians before heading to away matches.
