Mohammed Shami is celebrated for his world-class seam bowling, but his humorous side is rarely seen. However, at the Ceat Cricket Awards 2024, he entertained the audience with witty stories about his World Cup experience and being a second choice, bringing laughter to the gathering.

‌Indian captain Rohit Sharma, ICC Chairman Jay Shah, and former Indian coach Rahul Dravid couldn't contain their amusement when Mohammed Shami shared his humorous perspective on his ICC World Cup selection. At the Ceat Cricket Awards last month, Shami reflected on his experiences across three ODI World Cups, noting how he wasn't initially a top pick for the tournament. He also pointed out how he managed to make a significant impact every time he was given an opportunity.

When the host asked about this recurring trend in World Cups, Shami nonchalantly responded, “Aadat si padh gayi, kyuki 2015, 2019, 2023,  teeno mein same start hua hai (It's become a habit because in 2015, 2019, and 2023 World Cups, all three times started the same way). He further added a humorous twist, poking fun at the selectors by stating, “phir mujhe jab mauka diya hai captain, coaches ne toh aisa perform kiya hai ki phir inn logo ne kabhi socha nahi hai ki phir batiha de isko.” (When given the opportunity by the captain and coaches, I've performed in a way that made them never think about replacing me again.)

As the audience erupted in laughter, Shami carried on with his playful remarks, saying, “Mehnat kar sakte hai, main hamesha ready rahta hoon ki haan mujhe chance mile. Kyunki aap mujhe chance doge tabhi main kuch kar sakta hoon, varna table se toh pani hi pila sakta hoon bench se toh. So behtar hai jab chance mile mauka le lo apne haath me Nahi toh main bas bench se pani hi pila sakta hoon.” ( I can work hard, and I'm always ready for an opportunity. Once you give me an opportunity, only then can I make a difference, otherwise all I can do from the bench is serve water.)

Shami!! Hahaha!
