Pakistan were comfortably placed at 249 for 3 inside 40 overs when Shoaib Malik took guard at the fifth position. They needed runs on the board to pose any challenge to England who have been chasing down targets with ease. After an emphatic ton from Babar Azam, Pakistan’s middle-order needed to fire in order to go past the 350-run mark.
Hafeez was batting on 41 off 25 which included four boundaries and looked in good touch. In an attempt to improvise, Malik made room to cut a slower length ball from Mark Wood but only managed to ram his bat onto the stumps. It’s by far the weirdest mode of dismissals in cricket and Malik was clearly disappointed by this.
Malik’s dismissal dented Pakistan’s run as they could only manage 24 runs off next 20 deliveries. After a few hiccups, England chased down the target with three wickets to spare and continued their domination in the series.
