Dimuth Karunaratne played an interesting innings and most importantly hung in there until the end to ensure that Sri Lanka didn’t get all-out before reaching 100. However, the Lankan skipper embarrassed himself by docking the free-hit ball and even the umpire couldn’t stop himself from laughing.
In the funniest way possible, Karunaratne understood that playing more Test cricket breeds an idea that an ODI match is exactly the same. And the illustration of which made it even funnier and even the umpire couldn’t stop laughing at the utter wastefulness of a free-hit delivery.
On the fourth ball of the 28th over, Lockie Ferguson banged a short ball to Suranga Lakmal and the Sri Lankan pacer went for the ambitious pull shot despite the ball getting big on him. However, the umpire called it a no-ball, although the replays suggested that there was some part of Ferguson's boot behind the line. The next ball was invariably going to be a free-hit, but then Karunaratne made it a compulsive dock.
First, he exposed all his stumps by moving leg-side and that gave Ferguson idea. The Sri Lankan thought he would pitch it up on the middle and off, but the Kiwi bounced the ball on the leg-side to cramp him for the room. While he could’ve easily thrown his bat around for a shot, he decided to sit under the ball. The best reaction, however, came from the umpire who laughed at the tactics with an embarrassing Karunaratne watching him.
